Moringa specifications fail more often than they are missed. Buyers write a document combining every attribute they have seen advertised, suppliers agree to it because the order is attractive, and the first shipment satisfies two-thirds of it. Understanding which parameters pull against each other is most of the skill.
Colour is a processing tell
Bright green leaf powder is evidence of fast, low-temperature drying and prompt milling. Olive or khaki tones mean heat, slow drying, delay between harvest and processing, or stock that has been sitting. Colour also fades naturally with time, oxygen and light regardless of how well it was made, so specify colour at dispatch and specify packaging that protects it. A colour clause with no packaging clause behind it is unenforceable by the time the container arrives.
The most practical version of this is a sealed retained colour standard that both parties agree at the outset and refer back to. It removes an entire category of argument.
The microbiology trade-off nobody mentions
Leaf harvested in open fields arrives with a substantial natural microbial load. Bringing counts down to what a supplement manufacturer expects requires a sterilisation step, and each option costs something:
- Steam sterilisation: accepted everywhere, and the only realistic route for the EU and UK. It costs a little colour and some aroma.
- Irradiation: effective and permitted in some markets, restricted or requiring declaration in others. Check the destination before specifying it.
- Ethylene oxide: not an option for European markets, and increasingly not for buyers supplying manufacturers who audit their own supply chains.
Which means that a specification demanding very low total plate counts and untreated material and a vivid green colour is asking for three things that fight one another. Decide which two matter for your application and let the third find its natural level.

If you are buying organic
Indian organic production certified under the national programme is exported to several markets under recognition arrangements, and consignments into the EU move on a certificate of inspection issued electronically. Two things are worth checking rather than assuming: that the certifier is currently recognised for your product category, and that the certification scope covers the processing unit and the mill, not only the farm. Organic status is lost at the point where certified and conventional material can mix.
Two clauses worth adding
- A retained counter-sample held by the supplier for the full shelf life of the lot, referenced by lot code.
- An agreed colour reference, sealed and held by both parties, replaced annually.
Between them they resolve the two disputes that account for most moringa claims: it is not as green as the sample, and we cannot agree whose material this is.
